DOST’s Solidum highlights PH pivot to advance AI at UNESCO

Department of Science and Technology secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. represented the Philippines during the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at the sidelines of the AI Action Summit in Paris, France held on 10-11 February 2025.
“As we move forward, we seek to enhance AI policies through ethical governance, invest in AI-driven industries, and ensure that AI is a force for good—aligned with the values of fairness, accountability, and sustainability”, Secretary Solidum emphasized in his statement. While there are still challenges for the Philippines in promoting and fully maximizing the benefits of artificial intelligence (AI), such as a unified AI regulatory agency, funding for AI research and infrastructure, the country continues to conduct research projects and develop technologies and innovations that harness the power of AI.

Ending the music on a high note. This is what the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) did as it wrapped up its two-year project documenting eyewitness accounts of significant earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions using local languages in the Philippines.

Making Scents of It: The Art and Science Behind Fragrances

“I believe that fragrance, as an art form, is a work of the heart, more than the work of the brain.” This is what a renowned perfumer in the country, Oscar Mejia III said in a talk titled, “Bottled Masterpieces: Exploring the Art of Fragrances” on 26 February 2024.
The talk is part of a special event called Scents of Innovation: Local Art and Science of Green Fragrances, conducted by the Department of Science and Technology-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI), in celebration of National Arts Month.

It’s 2025 and even with numerous attempts to clear up our plastic waste, it just keeps piling up.
The Philippines remains as top waste generators in Southeast Asia with total solid waste generation of the country expected to reach 23.61M tons this year with most of these being plastic waste, according to the Climate Transparency Platform.
