DOST to feature yummier “tsokolate” in 11th Nat’l Biotech Week

Can’t get enough of chocolates? Thank, or blame,the microbes.
A “tablea tsokalate” without the grainy texture and bitter, burnt-like taste of some commercially produced tablea, will be one of several biotechnology applications to be featured during the National Biotechnology Week from November 23 – 28, 2015 at the SM City Dasmariñas, Cavite.
This better and more delicious version of the tablea chocolate is the product of a study by UP Los Baños scientists headed by Dr. Jessica Simbahan, and funded by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).

National Scientist Dr. Benito S. Vergara: genius and goodness combined

The science community mourned the demise of a great Filipino scientist on October 24, 2015 due to a heart attack.
National Scientist Dr. Benito S. Vergara, 81, was remembered by his loving family, friends, colleagues, fellow Academicians and National Scientists, and the rest of the science community during the necrological service held in his honor at the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in Bicutan, Taguig City five days later on October 29.
In their eulogy, National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST Phl) President Academician William G. Padolina and Academician Ruben L. Villareal, chair of NAST Phl’s agricultural sciences division, recognized Vergara’s significant role in the science sector, specifically in agriculture.

DOST’s STARBOOKS in 2015 Nat’l Biotechnology Week

Visitors to the upcoming 11th National Biotechnology Week (NBW), slated from November 23-28, 2015 at SM City Dasma in Cavite, can learn more about biotechnology with the help of the internationally acclaimed STARBOOKS or Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosks, a digital science library developed by the Department of Science and Technology-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII).
STARBOOKS, dubbed “library in a box,” will be among the technologies to be featured during the event, with STII personnel on hand to assist individuals willing to try the research tool.

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Mario G. Science Nation Tour is a nationwide roadshow that aims to highlight the benefits of DOST programs and technologies in every region of the archipelago.The first of its kind in the Philippines, STARBOOKS is a stand-alone research platform with a user-friendly interface. It requires no Internet connection and contains science information from local and international sources.
