Foods and ingredients fortified with folic acid such as rice and flour will easily find their way in stores and supermarket shelves once legislation is in place. This will provide more Filipina consumers with more amounts of a nutrient proven to help prevent the incidence of neural tube defects (NTDs) in their future children.

At a recent Roundtable Discussion on Folic Acid organized by the Department of Science and Technology-National Academy of Science and Technology (DOST-NAST), Food Fortification Initiative’s Executive Officer for Asia Dr. Karen Codling stressed the necessity of mandatory legislation to create an impact on public health.

“Eighty-one countries currently have mandatory legislation for the fortification of wheat flour,” Codling revealed. “All but five of these require fortification with folic acid. The Philippines is one of the five countries with mandatory fortification of wheat flour that does not include folic acid.”

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) rolls out its Hybrid Electric Road Train at the Clark Freeport Parade Ground in Pampanga this Thursday, June 25, 2015.

Designed and fabricated by Filipino engineers from the DOST’s Metals Institute Research and Development Center under its Makibayan or Makina at Teknolohiya Para sa Bayan Program, the 40-meter-long road transport is developed to help address the worsening mass transportation problem in Metro Manila and in other urban areas throughout the Philippines.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is looking to accelerate the growth of the local automotive industry by helping it to produce high-quality auto parts.

DOST’s Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) recently launched its Auto-Parts Testing Facility in Bicutan, Taguig as part of the week-long celebration of Metals and Engineering or M&E Week.

The facility will serve as a testing center for local parts manufacturers so that expenses incurred from overseas testing will be minimized.  Housed within the facility are more than 30 pieces of equipment performing different testing services for automotive and other metal-related industries, such as hardness measurement of metallic material and rubber, thickness measurement for base metal, simulated crash analysis, tire endurance testing, and accelerated corrosion tests.
