DOST invites future innovators in Metro Manila and South Luzon to avail research funding

February 1, 2023 – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) holds the second leg of its Call for Proposals 2025 campaign at Acacia Hotel in Alabang today to encourage researchers in availing research and development (R&D) funding. The event converged members from industry, the academe, government agencies, communities, and associations to share their ideas and support the country’s innovation environment.
“Anticipating future changes and laying out strategic investments for innovation are key factors to national progress,” says DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. “We believe R&D output creates the foundation for our country’s continuous development. The proposals submitted today may be the next inspiring initiative towards a better future for the Philippines.”
For years, DOST invested in high-impact and sustainable programs that are significant in addressing national concerns. This is aligned to the research priorities along four major areas, namely: human well-being promotion, wealth creation, wealth protection, and sustainability.

Expert says textile and garments are evolving, DOST explores other opportunities

Textiles and garments are among the oldest industries in the world and has become a launch pad of several in the world.
An official from the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) said that textiles and garments, especially in the Philippines, cannot remain the same as 100 years ago. It must respond to the needs of the times and to do that, science must always be there because if we fail to innovate, there will be no industry, to begin with.
In a sit-down interview with DOSTv’s ExperTalk program host, DOST-PTRI Officer-in-Charge Dr. Julius L. Leaño Jr. stressed that for us to be able to differentiate what is truly Philippine textile, the cornerstone has to be science, technology, and innovation.

P1-M cash prize awaits the winner of 2023 BCYF Innovation Award

To further encourage innovators in the country, the Benita and Catalino Yap Foundation (BCYF) once again leads the conduct of its Innovation Award this year to recognize individuals, teams or organizations who have initiated or developed an innovation that have measurable and tangible results improving their operations or their areas of concern.
Through the Shell LiveWIRE Program, the global flagship enterprise program of Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation that promotes entrepreneurship, innovation and meaningful employment, the awardee shall receive the P1,000,000 cash prize to be used for business upgrades, additions, expansion, or any other steps in order to elevate the innovation.

DOST showcases Philippine Tropical Fabrics during 2023 Philippine Textile Industry Stakeholders’ Conference

26 January 2023 – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) showcased Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) during the Philippine Textile Industry Stakeholders’ Conference at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City. Fashion and innovation blended perfectly during the fashion presentation of Filipino-made products with textile fibers from pineapple leaf, abaca, banana, and Philippine silk, designed for government officials and employees’ uniforms.
“Innovation powers the future of the textile industry” said DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr. “We hope to continuously empower our farmers, community weavers and small businesses who are an integral part of the value chain through S&T programs and projects. The blended textiles made from locally sourced fibers is an illustration on the ability of science to contribute to national economic progress.”
