Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro recently visited project sites in Aurora and Bulacan provinces on February 27-28, 2009.
First stop was the DOST-supported coco-coir processing facility in Aurora. The facility primarily uses the Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) developed technologies. The project benefited communities who do the weaving of the coir into geo-textile nets and other products. Geo-textile nets are used primarily on the mountainside as a net support to protect soft-soil and prevent landslides.
The next day, Sec. Alabastro visited the home of the first microwavable pork cracklings in Bulacan. Jennieâs Pork Chicharon is assisted by DOST thru the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) and Cleaner Production Program. DOST also supported the company in its packaging and labelling needs, and in solving its smoke generation problem.
