The recognition program was held August 27 at the historic Manila Hotel.
Among the R&D achievers and achievements are the Biochemistry Research Team led by Dr. Evelyn Mae T. Mendoza of the Institute of Plant Breeding-Crop Science Cluster, College of Agriculture, UP Los Baños for its research entitled “Pushing the Frontiers of Plant Biochemistry in the Philippines”; Dr. Ernesto O. Domingo who led and organized the Liver Study Group in the University of the Philippines, which done major studies on viral hepatitis including hepatitis A, B, C, D, E and G; the UP Marine Science Institutewhich,since its establishment in 1974 has made strides in biodiversity, biotechnology, and sustainable use of marine bioresources under the leadership of Dr. Edgardo D. Gomez; Professor Nelia P. Cortes-Maramba who has led for over 30 years a multi-disciplinary group of scientist-researchers in the systematic and scientific investigation of Philippine medicinal plants; the Philippine Human Development Report, which built a reputation for factual, insightful, and well written analyses of human development issues in the country; the Novel Biophotonics and Nanomaterials Research for Biomedical and Industrial Applicationsat the Instrumentation Physics Laboratory of UP National Institute of Physics led by Dr. Caesar A. Saloma who also recently selected Outstanding Scientist & Technologist during the 8th ASEAN S&T Week; Dr. Angel C. Alcala for his contribution to Philippine biological sciences comprising studies on RP’s land vertebrates and marine biodiversity; Dr. Joel Joseph S. Marciano, Jr. who represents the team that designed the Digital Provide Project, which deploys low-cost, functional wireless solutions that connect remote public high schools to the Internet;Dr. Ramon C. Barba for developing mango flower induction technology that also picked up the 2008 DOST Outstanding Research Award; and Dr. Romulo G. Davide who is considered “Father of Plant Nematology” in the country for spearheading the proposal/institution of undergraduate and graduate courses in nematology.
The R&D awardees are cited for significant contributions to science and technology in the country over the last 50 years. They received a special limited sculpture designed by multi-awarded sculptor Juan Sajid Imao.
