DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr. calls for stronger collaboration among the DOST and institutional partners both in the private and public sector to harness the power of research and development for wealth creation during the 7th National Research and Development Conference held on 15 September 2022 at the Philippine International Convention Center, Pasay City.

Bannering the theme of the 7th National Research and Development Conference (NRDC), ‘Sustaining the R&D Momentum through Prosperity and Wealth Creation’, it underscores the important roles of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) in the development of national wealth; having the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) as the lead of the first face-to-face installment of the NRDC since 2019.

To conserve the threatened plants in the country, the College of Forestry and Natural Resources of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB-CFNR) implemented a program to save threatened species of plants from possible extinction.

Funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the program aims to support the efforts of the Philippine government in saving endangered species of plants through ex-situ conservation.

Education and nutrition of children have always been at the forefront of various interventions by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) as the department believes that these are important in securing a better future for the next generation.

To fulfill this aspiration, DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations, Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang and his team, together with DOST-XII officials and staff, went to Sultan Kudarat on 23 August 2022 and visited PC Bayanihan Elementary School (PC BES) where students welcomed the entourage, waving flaglets in their dainty hands.

Dr. Wilfred John E. Santiañez, 2019 PCAARRD Balik Scientist Awardee, is one of the youngest seaweed taxonomists in the Philippines.

A Balik Scientist, Dr. Wilfred John E. Santiañez of the University of the Philippines-Marine Science Institute (UP-MSI), authored a new brown seaweed genus, Manzaea, from the tropical western Pacific and discovered a new brown seaweed species, Asterocladon ednae from Camotes Islands in Cebu.

Dr. Santiañez currently holds the record in having the most number of new seaweed genera described/named by a Filipino scientist.
