CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. expressed his appreciation for the support of some national and local leaders who supported the 2024 National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (NSTW) held in Cagayan de Oro City.

In his recent address during the DOST Unified Flag Raising Ceremony, Secretary Solidum commended Senator Juan Miguel F. Zubiri, Bukidnon 1st District Representative Jose Manuel F. Alba, Misamis Oriental Governor Peter M. Unabia, and Cagayan de Oro Vice Mayor Jocelyn B. Rodriguez for their contributions in expanding the reach of S&T in their respective constituents.

Zubiri was present during the National Textile Congress, showing his appreciation of the power of Science, Technology, and Innovation as tools for progress.

"I share the thoughts, prayers, hopes, and passion of every one of you today for the future of research and development in Science and Technology," said Zubiri in his message to the attendees of the Textile Congress.

The senator is a staunch advocate for DOST, who supported the Science Department during budget deliberations in the Senate. He underscored the need for increased funding for DOST’s services for FY 2025 and supported the establishment of a Philippine Science High School campus in Negros Island to extend opportunities to young Filipinos aspiring to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Meanwhile, Rep. Alba expressed his support for DOST's initiatives to provide solutions and open opportunities for the nation's economic development. "I am very happy that DOST is embarking on promoting a circular economy,” said Alba. “We will always be behind you because we know DOST is doing its best."

Alba was also instrumental in the recent Guinness World Records achieved by DOST on the most people planting bamboo simultaneously (multiple venues) as its leader in promoting bamboo as a sustainable resource for the circular economy.

Gov. Unabia on the other hand graced the opening ceremony of the 2024 NSTW on November 27, 2024, affirming the province's unwavering support for DOST and its commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation (STI) in Misamis Oriental.

“Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) must be utilized by the public and the community for them to be actually engaged in combating the challenges of life. The challenges of life, of the least, of the last, and maybe of the lost,” Gov. Unabia shared.

The Governor emphasized the role of STI in realizing this year’s NSTW subtheme, “Providing Solutions, Opening Opportunities,” in conjunction with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He added that STI should focus on the needs of the most disadvantaged sectors of our community.

In her message, Vice Mayor Rodriguez pointed out that, "[we] are proud to work hand-in-hand with DOST on numerous projects that are transforming our city and improving the lives of our citizens. These initiatives are a testament to our shared commitment to progress through science, technology, and innovation."

She highlighted the city's commitment to innovation, which bears fruit on its recent recognition as the 5th Most Innovative City in the Philippines.

Aside from government leaders, the 2024 NSTW also received support from the business sector, particularly with the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industries Foundation, Inc. (ORO CHAMBER) President, Engr. Avalyn A. Cahulogan.

The Oro Chamber, through Engr. Cahulogan’s leadership has been a partner of DOST for its technology transfer and programs for MSMEs in Cagayan de Oro.

DOST remains grateful for the continuous collaboration with its partners, Department of Education, State Universities and Colleges, Local Government Units, National Government Agencies, Non-Government Organizations, industry, enterprises, and the media, which strengthens the region's commitment to science and technology-driven progress.

The DOST is also grateful to the 613 stakeholders who participated and expressed interest in adopting and utilizing the technologies and scientific information shared during the event. (EOE, KDA, JR/DOST10)
