Science chief bets on biotechnology for food security, better healthcare

With agricultural productivity, food security, and public health at the top of its agenda, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) under the leadership of Secretary Mario G. Montejo, spearheads the National Biotechnology Week (NBW) 2015 which formally opened last November 23, 2015 at SM City Dasmariñas in Cavite.
Celebrated annually, NBW showcases the latest inventions and innovations in the field of biotechnology as a response to meet the challenges of climate change that have great impact on farm harvests, crop yields and climate-related diseases. It bears the them “Kaagapay ng Mamamayan sa Pambansang Kaunlaran.”

DOST’s solar-powered fish dryer to help small fishermen

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) presented its solar-powered fish dryer for small fishermen within the Taal Lake Protected Area, during its regional office’s 52nd anniversary celebration at the Taal Lake Conservation Center in Mataasnakahoy, Batangas last November 20, 2015.

Ph made digital science library goes to Malaysia

Visitors to the recent Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair (KLESF) in Selangor, Malaysia try the Philippines’ very own Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosks or STARBOOKS, developed by the Department of Science and Technology-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII). The first of its kind in the Philippines, STARBOOKS is a standalone information system placed in specially designed pods, and requires no Internet connection. It contains thousands of local and foreign S&T materials in various formats covering different topics like medicine, nutrition, energy, environment, and others. DOST’s “library in a box” will also be featured at the celebration of National Biotechnology Week, happening on November 23- 28, 2015 at SM City Dasmariñas, Cavite.

To further boost their resources for elementary and high school students in preparation for the K + 12 program, Adamson University (AdU) availed the first digital science library in the Philippines dubbed as STARBOOKS, an internationally acclaimed research tool developed by the Department of Science and Technology-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII).
