DOST Region II gets Philippine Quality Award

The Department of Science and Technology Region II in Cagayan Valley received the prestigious national Philippine Quality Award (PQA) Recognition for Commitment to Quality Management (Level 1) during the conferment ceremonies of the 17th Philippine Quality Awards at Malacañang Palace on September 22, 2015.
Assistant Secretary Dr. Urdujah A. Tejada with DOST-II Officer-in Charge Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang received the PQA Trophy from President Benigno S. Aquino III. Dr. Tejada was the incumbent DOST-II Regional Director during the PQA application.
US Peace Corps volunteers hail STARBOOKS as S&T learning tool

A group of US Peace Corps volunteers who recently got a first-hand experience of the STARBOOKS praised the DOST’s first and only “library in a box” in the country as a very good “S& learning tool.”
In a visit to the Science and Technology Information Institute (STII) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Ji Yusi of the US Peace Corps volunteers said, “It was awesome! Very easy to use and when you log in, it’s very easy to search with lots of videos and news, there’s a lot of information that people can use.”

“I don’t see the price as the problem. There will always be a price war. What has to be done is to market the benefits of the product, so the people will patronize it. Once the people know the benefits, they will buy the product,” says Jorge D. Aguilar Jr., founder of Nutrition and Beyond Corporation (NBC), a pioneer in the sale of iron-fortified rice (IFR) in the local market.
What the iron does, according to nutritionists, is that it helps carry oxygen into the blood and when that happens, the body system works better. One becomes more agile and less sickly. The brain too functions better. Ergo, it is important that the population is not iron deficient and this is addressed through fortifying rice with iron.

Jim R. Asanza Jr., quality control manager of Specialty Pulp Manufacturing, Inc. (SPMI), shows a sample of processed abaca during a recent project visit by Department of Science and Technology (DOST) officials at SPMI in Brgy. Hilapnitan, Baybay City, Leyte. DOST’s Regional Standards and Testing Laboratories provided the calibration of balances, test weights and glassware, as well as training on verification of common laboratory equipment and laboratory procedures to said pulp manufacturer.
