Fresh graduates and college students about to graduate from college in the provinces may be agonizing over how to gain employment in their locality where career opportunities are lacking.

The answer to this are online jobs, said Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICT Office) – Visayas Cluster I Director Frederick B. Amores.

“Online jobs is our answer  to the challenge of bringing technology jobs to areas that currently may not have many opportunities for local jobs in the tech sector due to local challenges such as environmental conditions [like]  typhoons, volcanoes, earthquakes, peace and order issues, geographic location - [being] far from major urban areas,” said Amores.

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) recently conducted an orientation-workshop entitled “TELA Matters: A Techno-preneurship Orientation-Workshop for the Philippine Handloom Weaving Communities” in collaboration with the Philippine Commission on Women.

Some 20 representatives from PTRI’s partner weaving communities from Ilocos Norte, Bontoc, Bulacan, Aklan, Antique, Iloilo, Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental, and South Cotabato participated in this activity which provided them with capability-building opportunities in market and product development; art, design, and niche market; design development process; and sustainable business concepts.

Manila Water Foundation and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) are now accepting nominations for the premier run of the Manila Water Foundation Prize for Engineering Excellence.            

Said prize, which is part of the Manila Water Foundation’s 10th anniversary this year, is a nationwide search for five exemplary engineers who have developed and implemented projects that champion water, sanitation, environment and sustainability for marginalized communities. To inspire and empower all Filipino engineers to serve the country better through engineering solutions resulting in positive social impacts, each prize recipient will receive Php500,000.

The partnership between the Foundation and the DOST was formalized during the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement held on April 21 at Eastwood Richmonde Hotel.

news-dost intl fair picks top student science projects-06092015

Photo shows the winners of the poster making contest and the Best Project awards during the recent 2nd Philippine International Science Fair by the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine  Science High School System (DOST-PSHS). The fair was participated by high school students from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Korea, Singapore, Sweden and the Philippines who had the chance to be mentored by top Filipino scientists. Selected as Best Projects were “Taal Lakers,” a solution for effective management of Taal Lake; “Sphyder” for faster, efficient and cheaper removal of garbage in bodies of water; and “Maximizing Efficiency of Water Usage,” an innovation to enhance crop production at a permaculture farming site in Nueva Ecija. The fair serves as a ramp-up to DOST’s National Science and Technology Week on July 24-28 at SMX Convention Center where students will display their robot inventions to the general public.
