An out of the RxBox experience

A female student has her blood pressure checked through the RxBox during the recent National Science and Technology Week of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) at SMX Convention Center. Rx Box has built-in medical sensors for monitoring blood pressure and blood oxygen levels, assessing the strength of contraction of the mother’s uterus, as well as electrocardiogram and fetal heart monitor. The device is capable of storing and transmitting patient data to allow health workers in remote communities to consult with medical experts in urban areas. Developed by University of the Philippines Manila-National Telehealth Center and DOST, the Rx Box aims to provide better access to life-saving healthcare service in isolated and disadvantaged communities nationwide. Outstanding Research and Technology Awardees

Four Filipino scientists and researchers were awarded for their outstanding achievements in research and development (R&D) and technology commercialization during the opening program of the National Science and Technology Week on July 24 at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia, Pasay City. They are (from top): Dr. Grecebio Jonathan Alejandro from University of Sto. Tomas, awarded the Outstanding Research and Development Award for Basic Research known as Eduardo A. Quisumbing Medal; Dr. Rhodora V. Azanza from the Marine Science Institute, University of the Philippines Diliman who received the Outstanding R&D Award for Applied Research known as the Julian A. Banzon Medal; Dr. Reynaldo V. Ebora, director of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at UP Los Banos who was honored as Outstanding Science Administrator or the Dioscoro L. Umali Medal; and Tessie C. Nunez of the National Coconut Research Center-Visayas who received the Outstanding Technology Commercialization Award known as Gregorio Y. Zara Medal for her commercialization of the soft-endospermed coconut known as makapuno. The awardees each received plaques, medals and a cash prize of P150,000.00. With them in photo are DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo and the chairman of the Board of Judges, namely, National Scientist Lourdes Cruz (for the Quisumbing and Banzon awards), Dr. Quintin Kintanar (for the Umali Award) and Dr. Edgar Garcia (for the Zara Award). This was the closing statement of Dr. Val Barcinal, head of Marikina City’s disaster and risk reduction management office (DRRMO), in his testimonial during Project NOAH’s (Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards) second anniversary press conference in Quezon City last July 22, 2014.

FNRI presents new complementary food for children

The Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) presented its latest product, Momsie, last July 26, 2014 during the 2014 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex.
Developed through a partnership between FNRI and the World Food Programs, Momsie is a ready-to-use complementary food for children from 6 months to 3 years old. It is high in energy and protein and has a rich nutty chocolate flavour. Its ingredients are locally available raw materials like mongo, soybeans, peanuts, and among others, which were roasted, dried, and ground.
