PAGASA observes Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week, underscores relevance of Project #MAGHANDA in disaster preparedness

With an average of 20 typhoons that hit the country every year, the DOST-PAGASA vigorously observes the Typhoon and Flood Awareness Week (TFAW) every 3rd week of June to give emphasis on the importance of early warning systems and early action in strengthening disaster action and preparedness to ensure the safety of communities during calamities.
“Mahalaga na prepared tayo at alam natin kung ano yung magiging action kapag inilabas na ng PAGASA yung mga early warning systems (It is important to prepare and know what to do once PAGASA releases the early warning systems),” emphasized Dr. Esperanza O. Cayanan, DOST-PAGASA’s Deputy Administrator for Research and Development. She also reminded the public to help clean the sewage systems to avoid clogging of canals that cause floods during heavy rains and typhoons, underscoring the need for cooperation by all citizens.
Batangas farmers’ group trains on food safety, packaging and labeling to upgrade their products

Bagong Silang San Juan Batangas Farmers Association, Inc. (BSSJBFAI) received training on food safety and packaging technology as well as labeling requirements from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Batangas in partnership with Batangas State University’s (BatStateU) Graduate School of College of Accountancy, Business, Economics and International Hospitality Management (CABEIHM). The training was conducted at Sitio Bagong Silang, Brgy. Escribano, San Juan, Batangas, last 28 May 2022.
BSSJBFAI is engaged in the production of chocolate-coated banana chips. They have adopted the technology on processing banana chips and integrated the chocolate coating process as product innovation they learned during the training provided by BatStateU-CABEIHM. To further improve their product, the Master in Business Administration students of BatStateU-CABEIHM initiated the capacity building activity for the farmer-workers on product packaging technology, labeling requirements and food safety.

On the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic two years ago, we quickly realized that having enough local experts in various fields related to science, technology, and innovation or STI is a big help to address pressing problems and issues.
After the challenge of President Rodrigo R. Duterte to double the human resources amidst the country’s fight against the pandemic, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is now hiring more researchers, scientists, and engineers to help government and industry craft and create and implement more science-based decisions and policies.
