“Our young designers, our young creatives are scientists just as much as they are artists”.
This was the message of the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) Director Dr. Julius L. Leaño, Jr. during the Stitch-Off Urban Vibe Fashion Show," the culmination of the fashion design and garment-making competition held on September 21, 2024 during the closing of the 2024 National Youth Science, Technology, and Innovation Festival at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Forum Tent in Pasay City.

Finalist Daryl Ceribo from the University of the Philippines Los Baños introduced an endemic species with potential applications in organic farming and medicinal use during a research presentation, reinforcing the call to protect endangered species in the country.
His study on the Philippine Camia won first place in the Undergraduate Thesis Grant in the Natural Products Oral Research Paper Presentation Competition, organized by the Department of Science and Technology–Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD).

Exclusive breastfeeding is the most effective method for enhancing the nutritional health of children under five years of age. Inadequate nutrition during this period can have long-term effects on health, some of which may persist into adulthood.
Furthermore, data from the Department of Science and Technology-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) from the Expanded National Nutrition Survey (2018-2021) shows that while timely initiation of breastfeeding (61%) is common in the Zamboanga Peninsula, exclusive breastfeeding among infants aged 0-5 months is low, and continued breastfeeding up to five years is uncommon.
