The Department of Science and Technology-Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) will hold the Science Journalism Writeshop on Communicating Biotechnology on November 23, 2016 at the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Main Campus in Quezon City.
The writeshop, to be participated in by selected schools, is one of the activities included in the 12th National Biotechnology Week (NBW) slated from November 21-25, 2016 at the Bureau of Soils and Water Management in Diliman, Quezon City.
Through the writeshop, participants will learn about the concept of science journalism as well as tips on how to best communicate biotechnology issues via the print and online media.
In addition, a simulated press conference will be held for the participants to get a feel of how presscons are conducted. This simulated activity will serve as an open forum for the discussions.
These will be followed by an actual writeshop and a critiquing session with resource persons.
The resource speakers are Dr. Crispin C. Maslog, consultant at the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication; Timothy James M. Dimacali, science and technology editor of GMA News Online; Stephen Joel C. Paredes, program director for Life Media and Advocacy Resource Center; and Dr. Lourdes C. Taylo, study leader for Bt Eggplant Project of UP Los Banos.
STII has been conducting writeshops in different universities offering communication and journalism courses since 2015. This year, the agency brings the writeshop to the National Biotechnology Week for the first time to focus on biotechnology as a relevant and useful topic for information, education, policy and decision making that will help lead the way for national development.
The event is by invitation only. However STII opens 10 slots to other communication or journalism student for free.
