The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) bared its activities for the 12th National Biotechnology Week (NBW) from November 21-25, 2016 at the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM) along Elliptical Road corner Visayas Avenue in Diliman, Quezon City.
The 12th NBW carries the theme “Bioteknolohiya: Kaagapay sa Pangkalahatang Kaunlaran.” It aims to highlight the key role and contribution of biotechnology, given its safe and responsible use, on the environment, food security, andequitable access to health services.
Among the DOST activities during the weeklong event are an agri-biotech forum and aqua-biotech forum organized by DOST’s Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development; a techno-forum on “The Colors of Cellulases” organized by Forest Products Research and Development Institute; and “#GawangPinoy:Biodegradable Food Coating” by the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development, all to be held at the BSWM.
Simultaneous activities of other DOST agencies shall also be held in other venues.
These are a health forum on the latest developments in HIV, drug discovery and development, genomics, and nutrition at Sulo Hotel organized by the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development and the Food and Nutrition Research Institute; forum on sustainable management of the Laguna Lake at Days Hotel Tagaytay by the National Research Council of the Philippines; a writeshop on “Communicating Biotechnology” for journalism students at Philippine Science High School (PSHS) Main Campus conducted by the Science and Technology Information Institute; a biotech essay writing contest and a career talk for high school students, both to be held at PSHS.
DOST agencies will also mount exhibits featuring its various biotechnology projects and activities at the BSWM grounds.
Other government agencies and organizations participating in the 12th National Biotechnology Week are the Department of Agriculture, Department of Education, Department of Health, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, International Rice Research Institute, Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture, UP Los Banos, Biotechnology Coalition of the Philippines, Commission on Higher Education, and UP Diliman-National Institute of Molecular Biotechnology and Biology.
