PH, U.S. sign Science and Technology Agreement

Manila, July 16, 2019 — Philippine Department of Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato de la Peña and U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim signed an agreement on scientific and technological cooperation at the close of the 8th Bilateral Strategic Dialogue.  Under the agreement, the two countries commit to promote scientific collaboration, build relationships between their respective scientific institutions and communities, and provide opportunities for capacity building and exchange of ideas and information in order to advance common goals.

The super heroes of science, the country’s esteemed scientists, are honored anew with the launching of the Salinlahi Science Center that features futuristic exhibits on the scientists’ careers and life stories.  

Unveiling the Salinlahi Science Center is the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Philippines which revealed new world of virtual and digital celebration of the works and valuable contributions of the 13 living National Scientists.  NAST is one of the advisory bodies of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).  The interactive exhibits, managed by DOST-NAST Philippines, is housed at the Philippine Science Heritage Center at the DOST Complex in Bicutan, Taguig City.

The research team developed not only a resilient study desk for kindergartens but also a warning system when earthquakes occur, a safety infrastructure for students to use, and a learning tool to passive disaster preparation of kindergarten.

The Nikkei Conference on the Future of Asia annually gathers leaders of business and government to share their assessment of Asia’s prospects and their positions on the trajectory that Asia should make and take for itself.

Science recently took another facet as a corruption prevention tool when the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) awarded the Department of Science and Technology a silver award during the PACC’s first anniversary on 6 March 2019.

The award was received by both the DOST and Department of Budget and Management (DBM) for their collaborative venture called Project DIME which made the government’s transparency and accountability efforts more efficient.
