The Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) invites local food enthusiasts, scientists, and industry professionals to a three-hour forum, NUKE TALK: What's Your Ulam, Bestie? on November 28, 2024, at Luxe Hotel.
This event will be part of the 2024 National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (NSTW) celebration and will showcase the vital role of nuclear technology in food security, from cultivation to consumption.
Attendees will learn about the powerful applications of radiation processing in food safety, including how it helps eliminate harmful microorganisms and extends shelf life. The forum will also delve into the exciting potential of emerging "future foods" and the importance of isotope techniques in ensuring food authenticity, particularly in verifying organic products and halal standards.
Keynote speaker Mohammad Nur Casib, 1st INSO Gold Medalist and Nuclear Ambassador, will highlight the global impact of nuclear technology in food security.
The forum will feature three key topics: Haydee M. Solomon will discuss “Irradiation Applications from Farm to Fork,” exploring how radiation processing ensures food safety and quality. Kristelle Mae C. Tardecilla will present on “Radiation Processing for Superfoods and Preservation,” highlighting its role in enhancing shelf life of special food products. Raymond J. Sucgang will delve into “Isotope Techniques for Halal and Haram Foods,” focusing on how isotopes verify food authenticity and compliance with halal standards.
Carrying the theme “Siyensya, Teknolohiya, at Kinabukasan: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa, at Panatag na Kinabukasan,” and the sub-theme “Providing Solutions and Opening Opportunities in the Green Economy,” the five-day celebration will focus on advancing a green economy that promotes waste management towards a circular economy and accelerating the deployment of renewable energy technologies to benefit businesses and communities.
