On September 18, 2023, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of the Philippines hosted the 16th Protocol of the Joint Commission of Science and Technology (JCMST) at the Crimson Hotel, Alabang. The delegates from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of the People's Republic of China, led by Vice-Minister Zhang Guangjun, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Undersecretary Leah J. Buendia, Ph.D., for the warm welcome extended by the Philippines and preparations made for the meeting.
The meeting was graced by a keynote video message from the Philippine Ambassador in China, H.E. Ambassador Jaime FlorCruz. He noted that Science, Technology and Innovation are an important driver of the national and global socio-economic developments thus, he hoped that the Philippines and China can continue sharing scientific knowledge and technological innovations. In his keynote video message, Chinese Ambassador in the Philippines, H.E. Ambassador Huang Xilian said that Science and Technology development is a key driving force for human progress. He also suggested that the Philippines and China should focus on further expanding cooperation on people-to-people exchanges, joint laboratory building, technology transfer, and poverty reduction.

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum, Jr. delivers the Philippine Statement at the G77 and China Summit on Current Development Challenges: The Role of STI in Havana, Cuba
16 September 2023 -- Representing the Philippine President, DOST Secretary Renato Solidum, Jr., participated in the G77 and China Summit of Heads of State and Government on current development challenges focusing on the vital role of Science, Technology and Innovation. The two-day Summit was held in Havana, Cuba and was attended by more than one hundred (100) G77 member countries including various International Organization partners.
The G77 is the largest intergovernmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations, which provides the means for the countries of the South to articulate and promote their collective economic interests; enhance joint negotiating capacity on major international issues; and continue pursuing South-South cooperation for development. In this connection, thirty (30) Heads of States and Government from Africa, Asia, and Latin America also joined the in-person general debate.

Sa kanyang pagtanggap ng Orden of National Scientist Award, hindi aakalain na sa likod ng magandang postura at makinang na ngiti ni Academician Carmencita D. Padilla ang ilang dekadang paglinang sa kakayahan at pagpapabuti sa serbisyo sa larangan ng new born screening at genomics na nag-akyat sa kanya bilang ika-43 na National Scientist ng bansa. Ito ay itinuturing na pinakamataas na pagkilala sa isang tao sa larangan ng siyensya sa Pilipinas na itinatag ng National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines (NAST PHL) noong 1976.
Ang Ikigai ay isang konsepto mula sa Japan na tumutukoy sa masusing pagkilala sa sarili kung saan masayang ginagawa ng isang indibidwal ang mga aktibidad kung saan siya ay magaling (passion), ano ang maiaambag niya sa pangangailangan ng mundo (mission) at pag-uugnay ng passion at mission sa kanyang propesyon at bokasyon na tumutugon sa pang araw-araw na pangangailangan.

DOST-PNRI holds national training on environmental radioactivity monitoring

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (DOST-PNRI) in cooperation with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) held the 2023 National Training Course on Environmental Radioactivity Monitoring (NTC-ERM) on September 4 to 8, 2023 at the PNRI compound in Diliman, Quezon City. The course was conducted face-to-face for the first time after the worldwide pandemic.
The PNRI-organized training course is an annual workshop that aims to provide working knowledge and practical experience to participants from various backgrounds regarding radioactivity monitoring in the environment. Participants in this year’s workshop include professors and instructors, nuclear and radiation workers, researchers, engineers, students, and representatives from public and private industries.
