Davao earthquake and tsunami monitoring facility strengthens PH disaster preparedness efforts

The Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) inaugurated the PHIVOLCS Mindanao Cluster Monitoring Center for Earthquake and Tsunami (PMCMCET) facility on 24 September 2021 to provide capable nationwide earthquake and tsunami monitoring that would ensure continuity of operations when the main office located in Quezon City failed to function immediately after an emergency or disruption.
Philippines claims 51st spot in Global Innovation Index 2021 report

Despite challenges from the pandemic and decreasing budget for research and development (R&D), the Philippines claimed the 51st spot out of 132 economies in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2021 report. In an inter-agency virtual press conference held on 21 September 2021, the Philippines proved that it is an efficient innovator with its capacity to translate innovation investments into innovation outputs.
The Global Innovation Index (GII) is published yearly by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. The Philippines’ 2021 GII score is a notch lower compared to its 2020 ranking. However, the good innovation performance of the Philippines resulted in its inclusion to the list of five countries in the world that made significant progress in the GII over time, along with China, Turkey, Vietnam and India.

Science chief speaks on regional development at the High-Level Policy Dialogue of DAP and UNDP

“The needs and opportunities are better known at the region, province, town, and community level”, Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña said in his concluding remarks at the High-Level Policy Dialogue on Inclusive Innovation held on 17 September 2021.
The Dialogue titled “Accelerating COVID-19 Recovery through Inclusive Innovation” was jointly organized by the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It was participated in by high-level officials from the Philippine Government including those from the Offices of the President’s Cabinet Secretary Karlo Alexei Nograles, Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, Senator Juan Edgardo Angara, and the DOST Secretary.
PH ranks strong among China and India in 2021 Global Innovation Index

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), despite dropping one rank at 51st in the Global Innovation Index (GII) for 2021 from last year’s 50th, maintains its strong bearing that “it remains committed in bringing science closer to society, empowering Filipino-made breakthroughs and innovations to increase productivity and drive prosperity.”
World Intellectual Property Organization Assistant Director General Marco Aleman, emphasized that the country’s 51st ranking puts the Philippines “together with China, Turkey, Vietnam, and India as part of the group of the only five countries, which made significant progress in the GII innovation rankings overtime.”
