Dr. Ramon C. Barba, the scientist behind the year-round availability of fresh mangoes, passed away on 10 October 2021 at the age of 82.
Dr. Barba was known for his distinguished achievements in the field of plant physiology, focusing on induction of flowering of mango and on micropropagation of important crop species that have earned him national and international accolades. By virtue of Malacañang Proclamation No. 783 signed by President Benigno S. Aquino III on 6 June 2014, Dr. Ramon C. Barba was conferred the Order of National Scientist, the highest recognition given by the President of the Republic of the Philippines to a Filipino man or woman of science in the Philippines who has made significant contributions in one of the different fields of science and technology. This award was created under Presidential Decree No. 1003-A on 16 December 1976.

DOST-I spices up local firm's processing facility in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur

To support the increasing demand for spiced vinegar known as "Inalsem", Onacoli Food Products of Barangay Bonifacio, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur expanded its current production facility with the support of the Department of Science and Technology Provincial Science and Technology Center - Ilocos Sur (DOST PSTC-IS) through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), by acquiring production equipment such as preparation and packaging tables and universal fritter.
With these interventions, the firm can ensure adoption of food safety practices in the preparation of ingredients and the bottling of products, thereby increasing their productivity and capacity in making the "Inalsem".

New DOST R&D Center to develop cheaper but longer life-cycle batteries for electric vehicles

The country is now eyeing at developing economical lead-acid batteries with optimal performance capacity as a better alternative energy storage to lithium-ion that can eventually be used for electric vehicles.
The Center for Advanced Batteries is one of the featured new R&D hubs under the Niche Centers for R&D in the Regions or NICER program that the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will put up with host universities to build strong R&D capabilities in the regions.
Pallet business group lauds DOST-FPRDI

DOST-FPRDI staff perform strength tests on pallets used by Goldrich Industrial Packaging Corporation.
The Pallet Business Association of the Philippines (PBAP) recently thanked the Department of Science and Technology’s Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) for its strong technical support to the members of her organization.
PBAP president Xenia A. Gabayan expressed her appreciation during an episode of the TV show “DOSTv” where she was a featured guest. “For many years now, the Institute has been there to help meet our most important technical needs,” she said. “They have assisted us with their testing services, wood moisture meter, lumber dryer, and heat treatment facility.”
