Aiming to showcase innovative solutions and strategies focused on enhancing climate and disaster resilience across Luzon, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through DOST Region I hosted the Handa Pilipinas Luzon Leg with the theme “Alertong Luzon, Solidong Nasyon” together with the Luzon cluster on July 3-5, 2024, at Plaza Del Norte Hotel & Convention, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.
The event was inaugurated by Hon. Matthew J. Marcos-Manotoc, Governor of Ilocos Norte, Regional Development Council (RDC) Region I Chair, and DOST-I Science Ambassador. He was joined by esteemed figures, including DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr.; DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang; DOST Undersecretary for Research & Development Dr. Leah J. Buendia; and DOST-I Regional Director Dr. Teresita A. Tabaog. Together, they set the stage for what would become a transformative gathering.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region I recently concluded the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) with the theme “Siyensya, Teknolohiya, at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na Kinabukasan,” focusing on providing solutions and opening opportunities in the green economy of Region I on July 4-5, 2024, at Plaza Del Norte Hotel and Convention in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, was a significant back-to-back event with the Handa Pilipinas Luzon Leg.
The celebration began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony graced by DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr., DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Engr. Sancho A. Mabborang, DOST Undersecretary for Research & Development Dr. Leah J. Buendia, and Hon. Rafael Chua Medina, representing Sen. Imee R. Marcos, DOST-TAPI Director, Atty. Marion Ivy D. Decena, and DOST-I Regional Director, Dr. Teresita A. Tabaog, along with various DOST & local executives. This momentous occasion set the stage for a series of transformative dialogues and showcases.

DOST wins best paper at the World Bamboo Congress

The Department of Science and Technology-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI)’s study on “Glue-bond performance of Dendrocalamus asper (Schult.) Backer using cold setting and thermosetting adhesives” emerged as the best paper during the 12th World Bamboo Congress in Taiwan, besting out over 120 entries from around the globe.
Authored by Dr. Juanito P. Jimenez, Jr. and For. James Edelbert C. Ramos, the study determined the bonding performance of laminated giant bamboo (D. asper) glued with cold setting and thermosetting adhesives at different surface pairings and glue spread rates. It provided insights on producing the desirable glue bonding parameters for engineered-laminated bamboo production and industrialization of timber bamboo.

DOST to put up reg’l FPITC to boost local forest-based industries in the PH

Local forest-based industries are set to get a boost from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) with the soon-to-be-established Forest Products Innovation and Training Centers (FPITCs) in the regions.
The DOST- Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI) together with the DOST regional and provincial offices are collaborating with state universities and colleges (SUCs) for the establishment of FPITCs, which are envisioned to enhance the capabilities of the forest-based industries in product design, processing and use of wood and non-wood forest products.
