The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) initiated and funded programs and projects addressing the negative effects of climate change in the agriculture, aquatic, and natural resources sectors through the utilization of modern tools and techniques or Smarter Agriculture.

In other swine-producing countries, the application of gene markers that are associated with economically important traits, has resulted to significant improvement in the number of pigs produced and consequently, the hog liveweight produced per sow per year.

“SIPAG,” which means diligence or industry, is fittingly used in the title of an event by the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) scheduled from March 2-4, 2016. It refers to the PCAARRD initiative “Strategic Industry S&T Programs for Agri-Aqua Growth” or SIPAG.

Combine this with another Tagalog word “FIESTA,” which stands for “Farms and Industry Encounters through Science and Technology Agenda,” another PCAARRD program.

The Philippines’ position as the sixth largest producer of shrimps in the world, with an annual production of about 50,000 metric tons, is threatened with the outbreak of shrimp diseases such as White Spot Syndrome Virus, Hypodermic Haematopoetic Infectious Necrosis Virus, Taura Syndrome Virus, and Yellow Head Virus.

To reduce the occurrence of these diseases, the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) funded a project called biofloc technology (BFT).

Two teachers, one from Quezon City and another from Tarlac, expressed their gratitude to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for a courseware that they deem very helpful in their teaching profession.

Meanwhile, another from Camarines Norte sent this message via the courseware’s Facebook page: “Your courseware project will be very helpful to my nieces and nephew.”
